Thoughts about aggro compared to control
So you just started playing Hearthstone or you’ve been playing it for years, this article will talk about what types of decks to play and why to play them.
The four main categories of decks are;
Aggro
Mid-Range
Combo
Control
Of course there are many subcategories, but these will suffice when talking about the things to reflect on when playing a deck.
The universal truth in Hearthstone is the more control’ish a deck is, the harder it is to play. Or to rephrase: the more aggro - the easier. People love to hate on easy aggro decks. If you agree, like my page…. easiest 1 million followers ever :)
So why is aggro easier? It comes down to a very simple principle ‘actions and reaction’. If you look at the types like this:
Aggressive track
Aggro -> Mid-range -> Combo -> Control
If your deck is further to the left than your opponent, you will take actions and he will do the reacting.
Playing the aggressor.
When playing a “action” deck your choices of play becomes more of a Solitaire game. You typically mulligan for a minion curve and if your 3-5 first turns were good, your success rate is very high. In almost all cases, the hand you mulligan for is the same no matter the opponent. This again means, the deck is way more forgiving for a player who doesn’t know the ins and outs of the game.
Though pirate warrior and aggro shaman has dominated the last expansions i think the most iconic aggro deck must be the face-hunter. Play cheap minion turn 1-2 perhaps 3, then rest of the game; hero power and play minion(s).
So, if you like winning more than playing the game or you are a new player who is having a hard time with more advanced decks, aggro is the way to go. If i sound in any way judgemental, it’s only for fun. I’ve played my share of aggro and the gods knows it’s the easiest way to get through the lower ranks.
Why do people play aggro?
There is a very simple answer to this question! It’s just way faster than playing any other type of deck. For many players the goal of Hearthstone is becoming rank-legend, and if you say you are a average/decent player you have win rate of 55% from rank 20 to legend. You end up playing around 400 games on average.
If you play aggro let us say a game takes 5 minutes and 11 for control,
Then you end up playing
Aggro: 33,3 Hours
Control: 73,3 Hours
Summa summarum: if legend is what you crave, pick a fast deck.
This is of cause a very simplistic view on the game, and the statement above somewhat bulsshit.
It should have read “if you want to become legend, pick the deck you’re have most fun with”.
If you ask me what i love most. The answer is not aggro or control. It is a deck with some function that my opponent doesn’t see coming. This could be unconventional cards or RNG effects. It’s the moment i know somewhere out there a keyboard died.
So, what about control?
The more controlling a deck, the more you feel your reactions to what the opponent does wins you the game, Often very gratifying. I feel there is a larger pool of possibilities when playing control. I always have slots in my control decks for tech cards.
Mind Control Tech if you face many minions
Bloodsail Corsair/Ooze/Harrison jones if you face weapons
Big Game Hunter if giants or large minions dominate the scene
The Black Knight is my favorite these days.
And aggro doesn't have room for most tech cards.
Yes yes, there is room for an Ooze…. and yes, perhaps some Golakka Crawlers.
Okay, tech cards can be put in all decks, but trust me when i say, they fit easier in slower decks.
I could go on and on about control decks. But I think the points about aggro are the most relevant. I will make a post about the types separately so i can go more into detail about them.
